What SEER2 actually measures
SEER2 — Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2, the current federal standard — is total cooling output divided by total electricity used across a simulated season. Higher number, less electricity per degree of cooling. Since January 2023, new systems in Texas must meet at least 14.3 SEER2 (labeled as 15 SEER under the old scale's rough equivalent). Entry-level new systems sit around 14.3–16 SEER2; premium variable-speed systems reach 18–22+.
Why the payback math is different in Waco
Efficiency upgrades pay back in proportion to how much the system runs. A mild-climate home might cool 600 hours a year; a McLennan County home routinely doubles or triples that, with the compressor grinding through 100°+ afternoons from June into September.
